App Design – Coupon Hunter

Coupon Hunter was originally designed for Target. It was generated under Target App Design Contest.

To start an APP Design with research

In-field research had been applied. There were three of us doing research together. I did in-store observation, casual interviews, current App analysis, and surveys. Coupon Hunter - Research

To conclude:

• Most customers never use cell phone or in-store wifi • Only 10% of customers use smart phones for coupons • 80% of customers think coupons are the most important feature for a retailer App • A lot of people go shopping with a spesific goal

She is a born shopper and money saver. She spents at least two hours per day on eCommerce websites and shopper's online communities. Her interest is buying. She feels happy and satisfied when she bought something she really likes. Most importantly, she has to buy with reduced price. To buy things with discounts or coupons makes her happier than just buy them. The time she spents online are mostly used to find coupons and big sales.

Find an amazing discount on good stuff that she wants to buy.

My goal:

• Enhance in-store experience (Coupon related) • Make customers eager to find new coupons • Encourage more buying

Ideation

Gamification

How to make the experience of finding coupons fun and exciting? “Hidden coupon” has been registered in store. It is invisible. It is just a piece of data saved in the hard drive with its own location info and discount info. Coupon Hunter - Gamification

Find

If a “Coupon Hunter” stays close to a hidden coupon for more than 10 seconds, the coupon will push to the user’s smart phone to provide surprise and big deals on products. Coupon Hunter - Find

Drop

It is also possible to drop a coupon if you don’t like it. You can leave a comment at the same time. This coupon will sit there digitally until another person can find it and use it. Coupon Hunter - Drop

Pair

You might also find another kind of “hidden coupon” called “pairing coupon.” In order to use it, you need to find another partner to pair it, then use it. Both of you own a usable coupon. Make friends, and save big. Coupon Hunter - Pairing

Is that it? NO!

After this concept was completed, I found that it is better to make Coupon Hunter into a platform rather than just one sole App for one single brand. Coupon Hunter as a platform that provides technology and service support for different retailer brands to set-up basic requirements in order to enhance in-store experience for customers. In the mean time, retailers will gain benefit from longer periods of time that customers stay in store, which leads to higher buying rates. High discount coupons are digitally placed in store to attract users. Coupon Hunter with retailers What if those retailers pay an annual fee to join this platform? It's hard to imagine how far it can go.

Conclusion:

• In-store wifi provides a signal to locate hidden coupons and users. (Minimum 3 routers)

• Hidden coupons mostly have huge discount (Motivation of being a coupon hunter)

• Comment and “pairing coupon” features help to build shopper’s social network (Enhance customer loyalty at the same time)

• “Hidden coupon” attracts customers to the local store. They are going to look around for coupons in the store; therefore, they stay longer in store, which increases the buying rates.

• Since “Hidden coupon” has big discount. It leads to high potential of buying.
